We just had our very first Balcony Girls Club meeting!
I had six girls at my house this evening – well, eight, if you include me and Lucy! We had such a great time! The theme of the night was “Caring” and what it means to be a Balcony Girl – a girl who brings others up instead of tearing them down. The evening consisted of a role play activity where each girl took a turn standing on a stage(the couch) and pretended she had just finished delivering an amazing performance of some sort. The girls in the audience would then applaud and cheer loudly. We talked about how good it felt to be applauded, and also how good it felt to applaud! Then we went around in a circle and said something encouraging about the girl next to us. We all agreed that it felt GOOD to have nice things said about us.
Next, I handed out a journal to each girl and asked them to write down what they would like to talk about and do in our girls’ club. Then we decorated the covers with collages. This was a lot of fun. The girls enjoyed the craft and also had a chance to apply what they had just learned. At one point, two girls wanted to use a certain magazine clipping for their journal cover. Another girl said, “You have to think of the other person before yourself!”
As I drove the girls home, they were all very enthusiastic about the club. They expressed their gratitude freely. It was very encouraging.
I can’t wait til next time!
